Choosing between ProPEX and CPVC is a decision between two excellent pipe systems. Both are code-approved, manufacturer-warranted, manufactured in the United States, and installed in thousands of Metro Atlanta homes. We install both, and we don’t steer our clients one way based on what’s more profitable to install.

What Plumbing Express Installs

Uponor ProPEX
ProPEX is Uponor’s current PEX-A pipe product. It is cross-linked polyethylene manufactured using the Engel method, the process that produces the highest, most uniform degree of molecular bonding across all PEX grades. That higher crosslinking is what makes PEX-A more durable, more flexible, and more damage-resistant than PEX-B or PEX-C. Uponor also created the expansion connection standard the industry uses today, ASTM F1960. ProPEX fittings are engineered to that standard. Uponor is the most tested, third-party certified PEX manufacturer on the market. The pipe is made in the USA.
How the fittings work. ProPEX uses an expansion fitting system. Before the fitting is inserted, the pipe end is briefly expanded with a tool. The fitting goes in, and the pipe contracts around it as it returns to its original diameter. The pipe material itself forms the seal. There is no crimp ring, no clamp, and no metal component inserted inside the flow path. The connection gets stronger over time, not weaker. Because the fitting doesn’t reduce the pipe’s internal diameter the way insert fittings do, ProPEX expansion fittings deliver up to 70% better water flow than traditional PEX insert systems: better pressure, less strain on the system, and consistent performance over the life of the pipe.
Flexibility. ProPEX bends around framing and corners without additional fittings. Fewer fittings means fewer potential leak points. It also simplifies routing through walls and ceilings.
Freeze tolerance. ProPEX can expand up to three times its diameter in a freeze event and return to its original shape after thawing. CPVC and copper cannot do this. For pipes routed through exterior walls or unconditioned attic space, this is a meaningful real-world advantage.
Chlorine resistance. ProPEX carries a chlorine resistance rating of 5, the highest available under ASTM F2023 testing. That rating predicts a 50-year service life under standard residential water conditions.

FlowGuard Gold CPVC
CPVC is chlorinated polyvinyl chloride, a rigid pipe material that has been used in residential water supply systems for over 60 years. FlowGuard Gold is the leading brand, manufactured by Lubrizol.
How it’s installed. CPVC is cut to length and solvent-welded at joints. The installation looks similar to copper. Connections are made with socket fittings and a solvent cement that chemically fuses the pipe and fitting into a single piece. Not a mechanical connection, but a chemical bond. The joint is stronger than the pipe or fitting alone. Once cured, there is nothing to loosen, shift, or degrade at the connection point.
Flow rate. CPVC socket fittings maintain the full internal diameter of the pipe through every connection. The fitting doesn’t insert into the flow path, so water moves through without restriction at any joint. CPVC also does not corrode and does not accumulate mineral scale, which means the flow rate at installation is the flow rate thirty years later. There is no degradation mechanism.
Thermal stability. CPVC expands roughly three times less than PEX when hot water runs through the system. Less expansion means less movement, less stress on joints, and less of the ticking and creaking that comes from pipes cycling through temperature changes. Over decades of daily hot-and-cold cycling, that reduced movement adds up to less cumulative wear at every connection.
Water chemistry resistance. Municipal water is treated with chlorine or similar disinfectants to make it safe to drink. Those same chemicals, in constant contact with pipe walls over years and decades, can degrade certain plastics from the inside out.
PEX manages this through antioxidants built into the pipe during manufacturing. Think of them as a sacrificial protective layer that absorbs the chemical attack so the pipe doesn’t. The problem is that layer gets used up over time. Once the antioxidants are gone, the pipe itself becomes vulnerable. How quickly that happens depends on the chlorine level in your water, the water temperature, and the quality of the original pipe.
CPVC works differently. Chlorine atoms are bonded directly into its molecular structure, not added as a protective layer, but built into what the material fundamentally is. That makes CPVC chemically unreactive to all forms of water disinfection: free chlorine, chloramine, and chlorine dioxide. There is nothing to deplete. The degradation process that affects PEX in aggressive water conditions simply has no equivalent mechanism in CPVC. This is the same reason CPVC is used industrially to transport concentrated chlorine chemicals. The resistance is structural, not a coating that wears out.
Pressure performance. CPVC carries the highest pressure rating of the plastic pipe materials. In residential applications the practical difference is minor, but it reflects the material’s overall structural density.
Aging performance. Unlike materials that weaken over time, CPVC hardens and its pressure rating increases as it cures in service. This is why plumbers who encounter aged CPVC on repair calls describe it as brittle. It has hardened significantly from its original state and behaves differently from flexible PEX under a cutting tool. A ratchet cutter that works on PEX can shatter cured CPVC. A tubing cutter or fine-tooth blade handles it correctly. The hardening that requires this different technique is the same process that raises the pressure rating over decades. CPVC in a well-maintained 30-year-old home is structurally stronger than when it was installed.

Copper
Plumbing Express installs copper for homeowners who want it. Copper is a proven, universally understood pipe material. Every inspector, appraiser, and lender is familiar with it.
In Metro Atlanta, copper’s long-term performance depends on local water chemistry. The Chattahoochee River basin water supply is soft and low in mineral content, which means it cannot form the protective calcium carbonate scale that normally inhibits corrosion in copper pipe. In areas with known corrosion history (parts of Cobb County in particular), aging copper pipe develops pinhole leaks in a predictable pattern. One leak is a repair. A second and third are a signal that the system is failing systemwide.
If you want copper and your home is in an area where water chemistry is compatible, copper is a legitimate choice. The Real Quality Gap in Pipe Materials
Now that you know what each material offers, here’s the comparison that matters more than PEX vs. CPVC: premium materials versus lower-grade alternatives that get quoted simply as “PEX” or “PVC pipe.”
A quote that says “PEX” without specifying the grade and brand could mean ProPEX-grade PEX-A with expansion fittings, or it could mean PEX-B with crimp fittings and a shorter service life. Those are not the same product.
Plumbing Express installs Uponor ProPEX and FlowGuard Gold CPVC. We do not install PEX-B. When you compare quotes, ask what type of PEX is being installed and which brand. That question will tell you more about a company’s materials standard than any number on the estimate.
Why the PEX-A vs. PEX-B Distinction Matters
PEX is not one material. There are three manufacturing grades: PEX-A, PEX-B, and PEX-C. They share a name and a standard, but they have different physical properties, different fitting systems, and different failure histories.
PEX-B uses a crimp or clamp fitting system. The fitting is smaller than the pipe’s inner diameter, creating a narrower flow path. The connection relies on a metal ring compressed around the outside of the pipe, not the pipe material itself forming the seal. Certain PEX-B systems installed between 2005 and 2020 have a documented failure pattern in Metro Atlanta and other markets, driven by a combination of fitting design, water chemistry, and the antioxidant depletion process that affects all PEX grades over time at different rates.

Is PEX freezeproof?
No pipe material is freezeproof, and PEX is no exception. What PEX-A offers is meaningful freeze resilience, more than any other residential pipe material. ProPEX pipe can expand up to three times its diameter during a freeze event and return to its original shape and pressure rating after thawing. That recovery capacity is what separates it from CPVC and copper, which will crack or burst under the same conditions.
The honest qualifier is that expansion capacity has limits. A pipe frozen solid in a confined space with no room to move, or left frozen for an extended period, can still fail. Freeze-resilient is the accurate way to describe it. For pipes routed through exterior walls or unconditioned attic space, proper insulation is still the right approach regardless of what material is in the wall.
PEX-B and PEX-C have meaningfully less freeze tolerance than PEX-A. The difference comes down to crosslinking degree and shape memory. PEX-A’s higher, more uniform crosslinking gives the pipe the molecular structure to expand and recover reliably. PEX-B has some expansion capacity but less ability to return to its original dimensions after a freeze event. It may not burst immediately, but the stress can compromise the pipe or connection point over time. PEX-B also uses crimp or clamp fittings with rigid brass inserts that don’t expand with the pipe, which creates a vulnerability at every fitting location even if the pipe itself survives.
Is copper still a good option today?
Copper is a legitimate choice and Plumbing Express installs it. It performs reliably in compatible water chemistry and is universally recognized by inspectors and appraisers. Can I replace copper with PVC?
Standard PVC, the white or gray pipe common in drain lines, is not rated for pressurized water supply lines. It is not the same material as CPVC. CPVC is specifically engineered and pressure-rated for hot and cold supply service. When people ask about replacing copper with PVC, they usually mean CPVC. That is a common and legitimate repipe material. Standard PVC for water supply lines is not, and any company quoting it that way should raise a question.
What is the difference between PVC and CPVC?
PVC and CPVC look similar and are easy to confuse, but they are engineered for completely different applications. Standard PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is what you see in drain, waste, and vent lines. It is not rated for hot water and cannot handle the pressure demands of a residential water supply system. CPVC (chlorinated polyvinyl chloride) is PVC that has undergone an additional chlorination process. That process raises its heat tolerance to around 200 degrees Fahrenheit and gives it the pressure rating required for hot and cold supply service.
The two materials are not interchangeable. They require different fittings and different solvent cements. Using PVC fittings on CPVC pipe, or the wrong cement on either, will produce a failed joint. FlowGuard Gold, the CPVC we install, is easy to identify by its distinctive yellow pipe color: a visible indicator that you’re looking at a pressure-rated supply material, not standard drain pipe.
My PEX failed. Should I switch to CPVC?
That is a reasonable response to a bad experience, and for many homeowners it is the right call. The core advantage of CPVC in this situation is that it removes the failure mechanism entirely. CPVC’s molecular structure is chemically inert to all forms of water disinfection: free chlorine, chloramine, and chlorine dioxide. There is no antioxidant reserve that depletes over time. The degradation process that causes PEX to fail in aggressive water conditions simply does not exist in CPVC. If you want certainty that your replacement pipe cannot fail the same way your old pipe did, CPVC provides that. My PEX failed. Can I still get PEX for my repipe?
Yes, and you may be right to want it. The product matters far more than the category name. Most documented PEX failures involve PEX-B crimp systems, a different manufacturing method and a different fitting system from PEX-A. Uponor ProPEX is PEX-A grade: it uses an expansion fitting where the pipe material itself forms the seal at every connection, rather than a metal ring compressed around the outside. The cross-linking degree is higher, the fitting system is more robust, and it carries a 25-year manufacturer warranty. If your position is that your specific pipe or fittings failed rather than PEX as a category, there is good evidence to support that. My plumber said CPVC is brittle. Should I be concerned?
The plumber was working on aged CPVC, not newly installed pipe, and the experience is real. CPVC hardens as it cures in service, and a hardened CPVC pipe behaves very differently under a cutting tool than flexible PEX does. A ratchet cutter, the standard tool for cutting PEX, crushes as it cuts, which can shatter cured CPVC. A plumber who reaches for the wrong tool on a service call has a genuinely difficult experience. But that difficulty is not a sign the pipe is failing. It is a sign the pipe has hardened and strengthened over time, exactly as designed. Properly cut with a tubing cutter or fine-tooth blade, cured CPVC is fully workable. A newly installed CPVC repipe is not brittle. The concern applies to old pipe with the wrong tool.
Why does it matter that your pipes are manufactured in the United States?
Counterfeit and substandard product risk. The plumbing supply chain has a documented problem with imported pipe and fittings that look identical to name-brand products but are manufactured to lower standards. Some residential pipe failures trace back to substandard imported fittings rather than the pipe grade itself. When we specify Uponor ProPEX from their Apple Valley, Minnesota facility and FlowGuard Gold from Lubrizol’s Wickliffe, Ohio facility, we know exactly what is going into your home and where it came from.
Warranty accountability. A US manufacturer is subject to US courts, US consumer protection law, and US class action liability. If a product fails and a warranty claim is disputed, you are dealing with a domestic company under domestic law. Pursuing a warranty claim against an overseas manufacturer is a fundamentally different problem, and one most homeowners are not positioned to take on.
Regulatory oversight throughout production. ASTM standards, NSF certification, and US building code compliance apply to the manufacturing process, not just the finished product. Domestic manufacturing means those standards are enforced across the full production chain, not only tested at the point of import.
Does the material choice matter that much?
Less than most homeowners expect, as long as you’re choosing between PEX-A and CPVC. Both perform well in Metro Atlanta homes. Both carry strong manufacturer warranties. The choice that actually matters is whether the pipe being installed is a premium, name-brand material (Uponor ProPEX or FlowGuard Gold CPVC) or a lower-grade alternative quoted without specifics. That distinction has a much larger effect on long-term performance than the choice between PEX-A and CPVC.
