Copper Repipe in Cobb County & Metro Atlanta
Stop Pinhole Leaks Before They Spread
Copper pinhole leaks rarely show up one at a time. One leak is a warning. Two or three in a year is a pattern. Thousands of Cobb County homes are losing their copper plumbing to a slow, water-driven corrosion process. Surrounding Metro Atlanta neighborhoods face the same issue. Plumbing Express handles these jobs with a turn-key whole-home repipe. One crew covers plumbing, drywall repair, and ceiling texture match. Call (678) 439-9540 for a free in-home evaluation.
Why copper pipes are failing in Cobb County homes
Copper was the gold standard for residential plumbing for decades. In the right conditions, it still is. The issue in Metro Atlanta is not the pipe. It is the water flowing through it.
Cobb County Water System treats water that is naturally soft, low in minerals, and disinfected with chloramines. That same supply reaches the neighboring city utilities that share the Cobb water source: Marietta, Smyrna, Austell, and Powder Springs. Over years and decades, that chemistry slowly eats through copper pipe from the inside.
If your home was built before 2015 with original copper plumbing and you are served by Cobb County Water System or one of those neighboring city utilities, your pipes have been exposed to this chemistry for their entire service life.

The science of copper pinhole leaks in Metro Atlanta
Copper normally protects itself by forming a thin patina on the inside of the pipe. That patina slows corrosion. When water chemistry is right, copper can last 50 years or more. When it is not, the patina never fully forms, or it gets stripped away.
Three things make Metro Atlanta water aggressive to copper:
Soft, low-mineral water
Not enough calcium and magnesium to help the patina form and hold.
Chloramine disinfection
Chloramines stay active deeper into home plumbing and wear down the copper’s natural patina.
Slightly acidic pH and high oxygen levels
Both speed up the pitting that creates pinhole leaks.
The result is pitting corrosion. Small, deep pits form on the inside wall of the pipe. They grow over 10 to 25 years. When a pit finally breaks through, you see a pinhole leak. By that point, dozens of other pits on the same line are already close behind.

Why your neighbors are getting leaks too
Water-chemistry-driven corrosion produces a clustering pattern that is easy to spot once you know what to look for. Homes in the same subdivision share three things:
- The same water utility and source chemistry
- The same construction era and pipe specification
- The same cumulative exposure to chloramines and soft water
When one home starts getting pinhole leaks, the rest of the street is close behind. Neighbors typically follow within one to five years on the same curve. Subdivisions built in the 1970s through 1990s are hitting that threshold now. That includes Marietta, Smyrna, Kennesaw, Acworth, and Powder Springs. If a neighbor has already repiped, your house is in the same window.
Signs your copper pipes are failing
Some signs are obvious. Others are easy to miss if you do not know where to look.
Pinhole leaks on the pipe body, not at fittings or valves
Green or blue discoloration on the outside of exposed copper pipes in basements, crawl spaces, or utility rooms
Water spots or bubbled paint on walls and ceilings where a hidden line runs
Multiple repairs to different sections of the home within a year or two
If two or more of these apply to your home, the corrosion is no longer isolated. Consider a professional leak detection visit to map the full scope before deciding on next steps.

Service couldn’t be completed due to needing a new system. We appreciate the very informative visit as well as insight that could help after a new unit install.
Plumbing Express was great. I had a failed sump pump that had partially overflowed into the basement. Nasty. Josh was the tech that did the work. He was efficient, neat and courteous. I will use Plumbing Express if I have any other plumbing needs and I will recommend them to my family and friends.
The technician was very knowledgeable and professional. I believe they did a very good job.
Ron was our second plumber from this company. The first plumber came, examined pipes and said he found no leak, even though we had experiences a large amount of water leaking from the ceiling in the finished basement. Several days later we had another leak-same area but less water the second time. Ron came in, listened to our frustration and did a more thorough inspection of the pipes and identified the problem. He was very personable and professional. On his third visit, we had several replacement pipes installed and are without leaks again. Our frustration, with the situation, was my son had used your company to replace pipes when he purchased the home and founding out not all the pipes were included with that process.
Tim arrived on time and was very professional. He took his time to explain the problem and the process it would take fix the water line.
Called Plumbing Express as tankless hot water not operating. Their website states "Get Free Plumbing Quote ". When service man showed up an looked at unit he said there would be a $207 charge to look into unit in order to give me a quote to fix unit. Due to not having hot water and time required to get another company to address the problem I agreed to pay $207 for quote. After looking in unit I was told he would not be able to fix due to age of unit and parts not available. I think he should have said parts not available when seeing model number on front of unit and I would not have wasted $207.
Outstanding customer service, we will definitely be using them in the future for any plumbing needs. Can’t thank them enough!
Extremely knowledgeable and very helpful. The team was excellent. The job was completed in 1 day with a great team. Very expressive.
Daniel Perez was great in coming out to check the problem I had with a water leak from my air conditioner line. His recommendation was correct.
Great and informative service while I was in a bind without a functioning water heater.
Plumbing Express is my go-to plumbing support team. They have fair pricing, well-vetted technicians, and a truly exceptional scheduling system. Rod, my technician, was the best. He quickly assessed the problem and gave a fair estimate, working hard to keep to the schedule. He even brought Josh along on the day of service, and the two of them worked well together. They addressed the bathtub drain repair with expertise and caused the least sheetrock damage. It was difficult to replace the broken pipe and get to the upstairs drain, but together they made it a success.
Daniel did a great job and was very professional during his service call last week!
Rod and Josh did an awesome job taking care of my clogged sinks. Knowledgable, professional and great to work with - I really appreciated their help today and would highly recommend them and Plumbing Express!
Daniel was excellent. The work he did was simply superb. I highly recommend your company and hopefully Daniel will get more and more work
Dylan from Plumbing Express came over and replaced our garbage disposal for us. It was older, had a massive leak, and needed to be replaced. He did a great job and was in and out in about 30 minutes! I also asked him to check out a potential leak I had been hearing in my ceiling. He used a thermal camera to investigate and was very honest and upfront about what he found. Rather than immediately cutting into the drywall to confirm something uncertain, he explained that the sound could simply be pipes expanding and that opening the wall might be unnecessary. He recommended monitoring the area and waiting to see if a wet spot appears, which would clearly indicate an actual leak. I really appreciated that he didn’t try to upsell or push unnecessary work. Overall, great service and a great guy. They will definitely be our go-to plumbing service from now on.
Once again we had some problems under our kitchen sink so we called Plumbing Express who were able to get us on their schedule pretty quickly after these storms Tim Robinson came out to do the job. Tim has been to our house for a number of different plumbing problems. He is personable & professional. As usual he did a great job even though this particular problem turned out to be far more difficult than anyone had expected. As frustrating as it was, Tim worked through it until he finished the job. We can't thank him enough.
Anthony was very competent, professional and friendly. He answered all my questions throughly. Highly recommend!
Frequently asked questions
Why is my copper plumbing failing?
Copper pipe failure in Metro Atlanta is a water chemistry problem, not just an age problem. Cobb County Water System and the neighboring city utilities that share its water supply (Marietta, Smyrna, Austell, Powder Springs) treat soft water with chloramines. That combination slowly attacks the inside wall of copper pipe and creates pinhole leaks. Homes built before 2015 with original copper are in the risk window.
Is this a Cobb County water problem?
The clearest pattern we see in the field is in homes served by Cobb County Water System or by the neighboring cities that share its water supply. Other Metro Atlanta utilities also treat surface water, but in our field experience the clustering of copper pinhole leaks is not uniform across the region. Cobb County water meets all federal regulatory standards. The concern is pipe longevity, not drinking water safety.
Why are my neighbors getting pinhole leaks too?
Homes in the same subdivision share the same water supply, the same construction year, and the same pipe specification. They corrode on nearly the same timeline. If one home has started seeing pinhole leaks, the rest of the street is close behind. Neighbors typically follow within one to five years on the same curve.
What are the signs my copper pipes need replacing?
Pinhole leaks on exposed pipe, green or blue discoloration on the outside of copper pipe in basements or crawl spaces, water spots or bubbled paint on walls and ceilings, and multiple repairs in different parts of the home within a year or two. Two or more of these together point to a systemic issue, not an isolated one.
Should I repair individual leaks or repipe the whole home?
Not every copper home needs a whole-house repipe today. Repair usually makes sense for an isolated leak, mechanical damage like a nail through the pipe, or copper installed in the last 10 years. A whole-home repipe is the right call when you have had two or more pinhole leaks in the past 12 to 24 months, widespread blue-green staining, a slab leak, or original copper on a 30+ year old home. The math also matters. Each pinhole leak repair runs $200 to $600, and a home with 8 to 12 leaks over 4 to 6 years can spend $1,600 to $7,200 chasing leaks. A one-time repipe ends the cycle. See our repipe cost guide for a breakdown by home size and material.
Can you just replace the bad section?
Yes, a single section can be repaired. But the new copper will be joined to older corroding copper and exposed to the same aggressive water chemistry. For late-stage corrosion, partial replacement buys time rather than solving the problem.
Which areas does Plumbing Express serve for copper pipe replacement?
We serve Cobb County, North Fulton, Gwinnett, Forsyth, Paulding, Douglas, and the broader Metro Atlanta area. That includes Marietta, Smyrna, Kennesaw, Acworth, Powder Springs, Alpharetta, Roswell, Dunwoody, Duluth, Suwanee, Norcross, Cumming, Dallas, and Douglasville.
Will my walls be damaged during the repipe?
Some drywall and ceiling access is required to reach the pipes. Our turn-key service covers plumbing, drywall repair, and ceiling texture match in one job. No second contractor needed.
How long does a copper repipe take?
Most whole-house repipes finish in 2 to 3 working days. Water is restored at the end of each workday. You do not need to move out.
How much does it cost to replace copper pipes in Atlanta?
Cost depends on home size, fixture count, and layout. Pipe and valves are made in the USA, and financing is available with approved credit. Call (678) 439-9540 or see our repipe cost guide for a free estimate.
