Galvanized pipe is steel pipe dipped in a zinc coating. The zinc was meant to keep the steel from rusting, and for the first few decades it does its job. This was the standard water supply material in homes built roughly before the 1960s, so in Atlanta it shows up in the pre-production-builder era: the small bungalows and factory-worker homes that went up before the big planned developments took over. One of our own team members has a home in Atlanta’s old Atlantic Steel area, built around 1925, that still had a galvanized line in it.
The catch is that zinc doesn’t last forever. Once it wears through, the bare steel underneath starts corroding from the inside, and that’s where the trouble begins. It’s a slow failure, which is why so much galvanized pipe kept working long past its expected life. If yours is still standing and still passing water, that’s genuinely unusual at this point.
How to Identify Galvanized Pipe in Your Atlanta Home
Galvanized pipe has a dull gray steel finish, the same color as a galvanized nail, with threaded joints where sections screw together. The easiest place to look is where the water heater connects, under sinks, or down in a basement or crawlspace where the lines are exposed.
The most common misidentification we see is people confusing galvanized supply pipe with cast iron drain pipe. Cast iron is much larger in diameter. Galvanized water lines are slimmer, usually around three-quarters of an inch to an inch on the outside. If it’s a smaller gray threaded pipe carrying your drinking water, that’s your galvanized. And remember that the water service line running from the meter to your house is a separate system entirely. It can be a different material than what’s inside your walls, and it gets replaced on its own.
Signs of Failing Galvanized Pipe
Galvanized doesn’t fail the way copper or PEX does. It doesn’t spring pinhole leaks or crack. It strangles itself slowly from the inside. Here’s what that actually looks like day to day.
Water Volume That Drops Off Under Demand
This is the big one, and it’s widely misunderstood. As galvanized corrodes internally, rust and mineral scale build up on the inside wall and narrow the pipe. We’ve cut into old lines that started as one inch and had closed down to about a quarter inch of open space. Here’s the important part: your static pressure often reads normal. Turn on one fixture and it seems fine. Turn on two or three at once, or run the shower while the dishwasher fills, and the flow collapses. Homeowners call that low pressure, but it’s really a volume problem caused by a shrinking pipe diameter. A pressure gauge can look perfectly healthy while your morning shower is fighting for every drop.
Rusty or Discolored Water
When corrosion loosens inside the pipe, chunks of rust break free and ride through your system. If you’re on your third shower cartridge in a year, your aerators keep clogging, and a plumber keeps finding grit in your valves, don’t keep replacing the parts. Ask what’s feeding them. Galvanized corrosion is a common quiet culprit behind that kind of repeating, seemingly random fixture failure.
Why We Replace Galvanized Instead of Patching It
This is the question we get most, and our answer is honest: patching galvanized is technically possible, but outside of special circumstances it’s throwing spaghetti at the wall.
Here’s why. When we cut into an old galvanized line to splice in a new section, the pipe frequently crumbles at the cut. The metal that looked solid from the outside has been eaten thin from the inside, so it falls apart in our hands. We cut back to find sound pipe, and it crumbles again. We cut back further. You can spend a day chasing good metal that isn’t there. And even if we get a clean splice, we’ve fixed one spot on a system that’s corroding everywhere at once. The next weak point is already forming somewhere else in the wall.
So a spot repair on failing galvanized doesn’t solve anything. It delays the real answer and costs you money on the way. When galvanized is genuinely at the end of its life, replacing the supply lines with modern pipe is the move that actually ends the cycle instead of restarting it.
What Can You Replace Galvanized Pipe With?
You’d replace galvanized supply pipe with modern water pipe: PEX-A, PEX-B, or FlowGuard Gold CPVC are the three materials we install. All three are corrosion-proof in a way steel never was. They don’t scale up internally, they don’t feed rust into your fixtures, and they carry long manufacturer warranties on the material itself.
We size the new lines correctly for your fixtures and run hot and cold to everything as one connected, tested system, using premium expansion or press-style fittings that keep the full inner diameter open at every joint. That last part matters more than it sounds, because the whole reason you called was a diameter that had closed off. There’s no sense replacing a strangled pipe with joints that pinch flow at every connection. Copper is available on request and covered under our workmanship warranty, but it isn’t what we lead with for new installs.

Homes with galvanized tend to be on the smaller, older side. The bungalow-era houses where we find it were rarely large, so the scope is usually more contained than a big modern home. The general process is the same one we use on any supply replacement:
